The mission is extreme, rare, simple and spectacular: start from the continent (Reggio Calabria, Italy), touch the Island (Sicily, Italy), go back at the starting point in the in the shortest possible time, trying to break the il record (34m16s) facing the irresistible charm of a very special long distance, both high-tech and mythology, between changes of current's intensity, changes of wind and sea... that's not a joke.The challenge is a reminiscent of those told by Homer, companies of heroes and mythological monsters, bizarre games of the current, songs of mermaids and magical illusions...
This's why, every year, every detail is tattooed in the memory and in the emotions of participants, and this is the spirit the event aims to preserve intact and genuine, the dream of writing the history of the deeds of new heroes. The Continent-Island Race GPS lasts 5 days, during which will be played two crossings, the RIDE and RACE (described following), both Queens of the Event and also a series of outline activities in water and on the beach: training of acclimatization, freestyle Camps with PRO, Videos and photoshoots, photo contest, hangtime races, relay races and team matches, matches speed with GPS... SUP contest for anyone. This year we have a news: will attempt the HydroFOIL Crossing of the Strait and the SUP in the same mission to fix the world record on this event! During Crossings matchs the public can follow, each instant in real-time, the placements of athletes through a GPS tracking system Android, also broadcasted live via Web and on the video walls of the Surf-village. The first day of the event, along with delivery of Official Lycras, event's bracelets, Free-pass and gadgets of sponsors, will be defined, weather permitting, the program of race, ride and inshore races. The organization of the event is NewKiteZone, Punta Pellaro (RC), IKO Center and Sailing Club with the invaluable help of Circolo Velico Reggio, Italian Federation Sailing 6th Zone, Regional Italian Olimpic Committee (CONI), RC Navy League, IKO (International Kiteboarding Organization ). With the istitutional support of: Municipality of Reggio Calabria, Province of Reggio Calabria and Calabria's Region. THE RACE is reserved for athletes and high level partecipants in kitesurfing and windsurfing, which will compete in a modern war with few rules pointing to break the record of 34m16s established in the "ancient" August 2011. THE RIDE is a safe (escorted) walk with support's boats and open to a broader spectrum of participants, recommended for those at their first experience and addressed to become familiar with the field of "battle" of the toughest Race. The down-wind (which is, really, cross to the wind) is long and impressive, it leaves you the time to enjoy riding in an endless ride submerged in colors and unusual silence, interrupted by a gentle plane in company of a friendly fleet. A whole other dimension compared to the more warlike race but it does let you enjoy the taste of the epic sail across the sea between the Continent and the Island... Read the RULES and after continue below with the faqs. MAIN FAQs: How long is? The distance between Reggio Calabria and Messina's cost, in this point of the straight, keeping a tack about cross to the wind, is 5,7..6 nautical Miles for legs (X2) so, in total, about 11/12 Nautical Miles (21/22Km). It depends on the path to fight the currents and to keep as close as possible the direction cross to the wind. How much buoys do we have to pass? Just ONE. In front of Sicilian coast there is the only one bouy to pass retouring in the direction of the Continent. In other words you need to keep the first leg (6/7Miles) on the same position (starboard) and the second one keeping the opposite one (larboard) RACE_FAQs: They can all participate? The competition is aimed at those who have proven at least medium experience in competitions. Override all those who have already attended one of the previous editions. If you are "new" to the event you have to know that you must have experience of at least 4 years of kite, how to make a correct (IKO) self-rescue and provide a presentation letter 7 days before the race. The organizing committee reserves the sole right to grant or deny access to the race. In the negative case the registration fees paid will be fully refunded. What kind of board can I use? we have NO RULES about type of boards, so essentially: no limitations. The Continent.Island Race is a lab tech where companies push the highest levels of experimentation and innovation in materials and strategies. For the kite in particular will be awarded the categories: race/unidirectional/foil and twintip. But the race is so favored? "The Continent-Island is the Paris-Dakar of the Sea ..." so Nobody can make realistic predictions . And historically, the distances of those who compete with race boards, given the highly variable conditions of wind and sea during the crossing, are not so large compared to those who compete with the twintips... Record is so hard to beat? and between kite and windsurfing which are the performances? Each year the challenge is on again: kiters and windsurfers playing a game without end and without possible predictions, although the materials of windsurfing, especially in the early years were higher. Latest kites and the last race boards, twintip and speed/kitecross, from the world speed record that holds the kite, giving confidence that the fair balance can be restored. So for now the dream is to beat the wall of the 30 minutes to complete the challenge. What are the expected conditions of the course? The Continent-Island Race is an extreme race, in every respect. No race extends over such a wide range of race's field and meets so similar scenario, in and out of the water. Although the period of the event was conceived and designed so that the conditions should be the most favorable possible, you should note that you will cross one of the most challenging and complex Sea. Not surprisingly, the mythology (myths of Scylla and Charybdis) and the famous story of Ulysses sailing this dangerous part of sea, tackling about current and wind, refering a so ancient story. All that say a lot about what to expect these technological and modern heroes. Currents are often reversed, intensity not constant... surface conditions challenging at times, wind intensity varies progressively up to push hard in the middle of the Strait, lashing the equipment pilots and putting to a severe test their physical and their concentration. This now classic Special event stages a showdown in which participants challenge themselves first, the greatest enemy ... Must be present on the first day of the event? Yes, this year's event is enriched by a series of activities in water and on land, that lasts all five days of the event. With competitions, photoshooting, demo and Camp freestyle, team games. The first day is dedicated in particular to the skippers meeting, with the description and explanation of the spot, being especially important for those who have never participated in this experience and the description of these races. This first day as well as being intended for acclimatization to the competition and conditions of the Strait. In the first day, also, you can do registrayion, this is mandatory. I can only make the 1 day crossing? No, the event is open to members registered on the first day and who has attended the whole event. The crossing is on the weekend (Saturday or Sunday)? NO the Continent-Island Team will schedule each match and it will be defined according to weather conditions. Generally if there are reasonably reliable forecasts from the first day of the event. Logically, if the forecasts are constant we will try to use the weekend as best as possible. Women or Men? Each year, the number of participants increases, indicating this challenge has been taken even by women with unexpected firmness and decisiveness. The only difference is the kind of smile at the end, cutting the finish line. Between Race and surfboard you choose? this is also a 10ml dollars question... Race pays more in the different conditions as upwind performances is not so important during this race... We start together, kite and windsurfing? Yes, it will be a described during the skipper meeting. Do you provide the Android phones? No. This is a pre-requisite for participate in the competition: you will need to bring an Android smartphone (or second choice as an iphone or blackberry) fully charged at the time of departure and Internet traffic enabled. Book at least 7 days in advance you can request a listing on the rental of the system and agree with the technological partner of the event the availability of terminals. Italian Internet SIMs are available but have to be booked in advance. It's a big upwind route? what's the direction to keep? It will be explained during the skipper meeting: each necessary detail to better understand the"field of battle." In particular conditions of wind speed / current and tide, could be decided as a precaution a light upwind leg to then have more room on the way /leg back. There are cash prizes? Yes. All recordmen will be prized by sponsors and all winners will be rewarded with an exclusive and prestigious handmade Trophy by an artist and sculptor of Reggio Calabria. RIDE_FAQs How long does it take for the "Walk / Ride" on average? the duration from the start / departure to the return to Reggio Calabria can vary from about 50 minutes to about 1h15m. There is a winner in the ride? No, the Ride is a "walk" escorted, an endless riding in the middle of the Strait between waves and unpredictable currents, but at moderate speeds so everyone can enjoy the purity of the "experience" without the pression of the "Race"'s atmosphere . The awards will be surprised... some sort of recognition for those who particularly distinguished between escort and escorted ... We will be guided? Yes, in water there will be some experienced guides who will set up and will set the route to follow. Generic / Common FAQ What you need to have to make race the race or ride? You need to participate: - At least 18 years old; - Medical certificate for non-competitive; - Flotation vest or Impacy float sufficiently; - A good workout is a must to compete in the "Race" and a decent workout (running, rope, etc.), for "Ride"; - Registering with this page - Have a valid Kite insurance; - Wetsuit (recommended, light long 4/3 or 3/2); - Helmet (optional but recommended, light-colored / visible); - the smartphone (Android Recommended) and a second one (simple, usable with one hand in water) in a waterproof case (may be found here the suggested top quality Aquapac); - Lines Cutter; - Recommended: whistle and / or mirror (not glass), sunglasses; - Kites accepted: from 6mq to 14mq, at least 2013 without repairs (older kites have to be approved by the organization after be examined); - Lines: 25 meters max; - Board accepted: all; - No to any type of board leash (also prohibited the rotoleash, springs and like so). The navigation in the Strait is blocked? Specifically for the event, every year, is issued a special Order of the Coast Guard and the Maritime Authority of the Strait (AMS), which regulates navigation with specific limitations. In particular, the status of "Securité" is called 30 minutes before the departure takes place. This code alerts the ships passing about the presence of kitesurfing and windsurfing and sailing, and it requires for boats to maintain the minimum speed possible and make it easy to avoid any type of interference, for those too close to the race course, for the entire duration of the crossing. Happened, we hope not this year, a couple of ships have not complied with the "red light" imposed by the maritime engaging, though under a large "safety", incurring penalties in subsequent ritual. In order to standardize all the difficulties of the participants, this year we will strengthen the control of the transit of these big ships from the ground and assist, if necessary, the authorities in advance. What are the Freestyle Camps? This edition is enriched by the presence of some event PRO. National PRO team riders twinned with NewKiteZone PuntaPellaro. In the days scheduled the Camps will help and guide our members toward the targets of their progression and fun. Wind allowing, will be organized a mini freestyle contest. There is nothing to do for others? Absolutely yes! We have a series of hilarious events that extend participation to all (subject to booking and approval by the organizing committee). Among these, the most compelling: hang time, top speed with GPS, Mini race, Relay, bodydrag race, kite loop contest, SUP races and demo etc etc ... And for carers and the public? For them, an entire area dedicated to wellness, fitness and music! 8h a day of entertainment and fitness professionals will take care of fun: zumba zumba, and aqua-zumbazumba, Caribbean Latin dance, dance, entertainment, team games, music, choreography, aerobics, yoga, massage area, relaxation and wellness care. To animate the fitness areas, there will be one of the most important national radio and live interviews. Which media at the Continent-Island? To ensure the wide broadcast of the Event's communication will be the professionalism of Video Calabria 8, share leader in Calabria, it covers the entire duration of the event, YouTube boardcasting. No Wind policy: Normally 5 days are enought to find wind, direction and stabe conditions to run the races. Note: NO refunds in NO wind cases but you will receive 25€ OFF for the next year's booking fee. There is Wi-Fi in the surf village?
