The mission is extreme, rare, simple and spectacular: start from the continent (Reggio Calabria, Italy), touch the Island (Sicily, Italy), go back at the starting point in the in the shortest possible time, trying to break the il record (34m16s) facing the irresistible charm of a very special long distance, both high-tech and mythology, between changes of current's intensity, changes of wind and sea... that's not a joke. The challenge is a reminiscent of those told by Homer, companies of heroes and mythological monsters, bizarre games of the current, songs of mermaids and magical illusions...
This's why, every year, every detail is tattooed in the memory and in the emotions of participants, and this is the spirit the event aims to preserve intact and genuine, the dream of writing the history of the deeds of new heroes.
The Continent-Island Race GPS lasts 5 days, during which will be played two crossings, the RIDE and RACE (described following), both Queens of the Event and also a series of outline activities in water and on the beach: training of acclimatization, freestyle Camps with PRO, Videos and photoshoots, photo contest, hangtime races, relay races and team matches, matches speed with GPS... SUP contest for anyone.
This year we have a news: will attempt the HydroFOIL Crossing of the Strait and the SUP in the same mission to fix the world record on this event!
During Crossings matchs the public can follow, each instant in real-time, the placements of athletes through a GPS tracking system Android, also broadcasted live via Web and on the video walls of the Surf-village. The first day of the event, along with delivery of Official Lycras, event's bracelets, Free-pass and gadgets of sponsors, will be defined, weather permitting, the program of race, ride and inshore races. The organization of the event is NewKiteZone, Punta Pellaro (RC), IKO Center and Sailing Club with the invaluable help of Circolo Velico Reggio, Italian Federation Sailing 6th Zone, Regional Italian Olimpic Committee (CONI), RC Navy League, IKO (International Kiteboarding Organization ). With the istitutional support of: Municipality of Reggio Calabria, Province of Reggio Calabria and Calabria's Region.
THE RACE is reserved for athletes and high level partecipants in kitesurfing and windsurfing, which will compete in a modern war with few rules pointing to break the record of 34m16s established in the "ancient" August 2011.
THE RIDE is a safe (escorted) walk with support's boats and open to a broader spectrum of participants, recommended for those at their first experience and addressed to become familiar with the field of "battle" of the toughest Race. The down-wind (which is, really, cross to the wind) is long and impressive, it leaves you the time to enjoy riding in an endless ride submerged in colors and unusual silence, interrupted by a gentle plane in company of a friendly fleet. A whole other dimension compared to the more warlike race but it does let you enjoy the taste of the epic sail across the sea between the Continent and the Island...
Read the RULES and after continue below with the faqs.
How long is? The distance between Reggio Calabria and Messina's cost, in this point of the straight, keeping a tack about cross to the wind, is 5,7..6 nautical Miles for legs (X2) so, in total, about 11/12 Nautical Miles (21/22Km). It depends on the path to fight the currents and to keep as close as possible the direction cross to the wind.
How much buoys do we have to pass? Just ONE. In front of Sicilian coast there is the only one bouy to pass retouring in the direction of the Continent. In other words you need to keep the first leg (6/7Miles) on the same position (starboard) and the second one keeping the opposite one (larboard)

What kind of board can I use? we have NO RULES about type of boards, so essentially: no limitations.
The Continent.Island Race is a lab tech where companies push the highest levels of experimentation and innovation in materials and strategies. For the kite in particular will be awarded the categories: race/unidirectional/foil and twintip.
But the race is so favored? "The Continent-Island is the Paris-Dakar of the Sea ..." so Nobody can make realistic predictions . And historically, the distances of those who compete with race boards, given the highly variable conditions of wind and sea during the crossing, are not so large compared to those who compete with the twintips...
Record is so hard to beat? and between kite and windsurfing which are the performances? Each year the challenge is on again: kiters and windsurfers playing a game without end and without possible predictions, although the materials of windsurfing, especially in the early years were higher. Latest kites and the last race boards, twintip and speed/kitecross, from the world speed record that holds the kite, giving confidence that the fair balance can be restored. So for now the dream is to beat the wall of the 30 minutes to complete the challenge.
What are the expected conditions of the course? The Continent-Island Race is an extreme race, in every respect. No race extends over such a wide range of race's field and meets so similar scenario, in and out of the water. Although the period of the event was conceived and designed so that the conditions should be the most favorable possible, you should note that you will cross one of the most challenging and complex Sea. Not surprisingly, the mythology (myths of Scylla and Charybdis) and the famous story of Ulysses sailing this dangerous part of sea, tackling about current and wind, refering a so ancient story. All that say a lot about what to expect these technological and modern heroes. Currents are often reversed, intensity not constant... surface conditions challenging at times, wind intensity varies progressively up to push hard in the middle of the Strait, lashing the equipment pilots and putting to a severe test their physical and their concentration. This now classic Special event stages a showdown in which participants challenge themselves first, the greatest enemy ...

In particular, the status of "Securité" is called 30 minutes before the departure takes place. This code alerts the ships passing about the presence of kitesurfing and windsurfing and sailing, and it requires for boats to maintain the minimum speed possible and make it easy to avoid any type of interference, for those too close to the race course, for the entire duration of the crossing. Happened, we hope not this year, a couple of ships have not complied with the "red light" imposed by the maritime engaging, though under a large "safety", incurring penalties in subsequent ritual.
