Sea, air, currents, wind, waves to tame, the memories of an ancient past that still lives in the modern sports using ultra hi-tech from 1st to 5th August in Reggio Calabria.
Everything turns around some very “cool” sport, as so exclusive as so spectacular: kite surfing, sailing, windsurfing groove the waves of a deep-sea, in the same strait of water where Ulysses tamed the elements, between sea and mythological monsters, between nature and mystery, adrenaline and fear, between pride and the thrilling challenge against themselves.
To film all that the helicopter, used to coordinate the race and the TV/movie, will not be enought to cover the 5 days of competitions, training, and simulations/show. Clearly, for organizing this 5th edition of the Continent-Island GPS Green Crossing Race 2012, it was still necessary some news to share with the others all the emotions experienced by the participants.
For this the NewKiteZone’s team, the IKO Kitesurfing Center of Pellaro (Reggio Calabria, Italy), event’s organizer, decided to track athletes in the water with a GPS software, usnig the high technology of Android smartphones and projecting the positions and the race on the videowall of the SurfVillage, set on the central seafront in Reggio Calabria, and let enjoy the match live on comfortably in the bleachers of the Arena Franco Ciccio.
Crews and men coming not only from all over Italy, will offer an extraordinary sight, driven only by wind, reliving and reviving old feelings in challenging the limits for reasonableness would unattainable.
Instead, fast kite-surfing and windsurfing are capable of speeds of up to annihilate us and let us able to bet for one or the other in a war that lasts less than we might think to cover 23km (13Nautical Miles about), the path you need to go from Reggio, touching the shores of Sicily near Tremestieri, south of Messina and retuning to Reggio.
The previous editions of the first brave did that in just about 34 minutes!
Driven by and only the pure wind, force of arms, legs and a big dose of courage.
Graceful missiles on the water, yes, but, in the silence of whistling, tenacious and often threatening winds, through strong waves, buffeted by the specter of fatigue, terrible, appearing as a ghost, inexorably on the returning leg, when the mind looses control before the legs, during a mad race, following a helicopter that will guide the path to follow in the sky...
We seen different races in Europe but this, actually, is so extreme and spectacular this is why it unquestionably attracts and involves the audience so much.
Weather permitting, the sailing / races will be different: kitesurfers against windsurfers, lasers, and the majestic Yachts (that will compete for the first time), all under the satellite tracking system that will involve the public, even when the race will be away from the coast, and so they can cheer their favorite teams and athletes.
GPS Crossing The Continent-Island GPS Green Crossing Race, or simply "Traversata", is now a consolidated and prestigious Sail Classic Event and an exciting challenge of sea and wind, and for this reason, every year, revives interest and curiosity, stimulating approach to the sports involved.
Over fifty competitors this year, another about full booked, from everywhere, remain affected by the changing landscape offered by unusual scenery and a war of emotions.
The modern challenge so high-tech is exciting. The audience follows from the amphitheater / arena, photographer, fans, admire the performances, the flights and acrobatics with breathtaking high jumps in water and let willingly involving themselves personally from the attractions of the fitness activities or simply sistening to the music of surfvillage.
The Kite, new entry in the next Olympic of Rio 2016, will battle until the last breath of wind .
The 2012 edition is rich of news, not just the new site, in English and Italian (www.traversata.it), and celebrates a mirage in which heroes of mythology come alive in modern kite’s-tamers, reviving an ancient link between epic, sports, culture, tradition and reality.
To act as masters of the whole "festival of the sea" will be just the “warriors in flight”, during the five day, will color the skies and will be reflected in the waters of Reggio Calabria with their kite along with the windsurfing sails.
During the event the performance of athletes impress the audience with a series of shows and races, different every day and that will be the subject of shooting a in a photocontest, for photographers, artists, film makers. They will compete in the production of artistic elaborate that will be voted on Facebook and by a jury.
On the land, next to the water-area, every day till night, the animation and music drive the fitness activities of the surf-village, managed by professionals and leaders, integrated perfectly with new wellness area.
To relax the daily, space to the fun: five parties, one each night, where the charismatic surfers and board-lovers will find themselves all together in the 5DaysSurfParty, every night in a different room... it will be a surprise to discover it...
In short, there are all the ingredients for another successful event that every year sees to grow: audience, partecipants, visitors, athletes, sponsors of international prestige.
All that remains is to suggest to all, sailing enthusiasts and not, to take commitments from 1st till 5th August and visit Reggio Calabria for one of the most interesting events of the Italian Summer; it promises to reserve five days of absolute fun.
